Meet Your 9 Chakras: A Map of Your Energy Body

Written by Dr Priya Vallabh and Susan Clark

The chakras are best described in two groups: Group A are the seven chakras that we know best - they regulate how we express life force energy WITHIN our embodiment. Group B include the Earth and Soul Star Chakras, and the Heart Chakra - these chakras connect us to the flow of life force BEYOND our embodiments - they are our transpersonal chakras. The Heart Chakra fits into both groups, because it is our relational and integration chakra.

The nine chakras we work with form a complete energetic architecture, spanning from below our feet to above the crown of our heads. Together, they create a living bridge between Earth and Cosmos — between the most grounded, embodied experience of being human and the widest reaches of soul and universal consciousness. Each centre has its own character, its own gifts, its own territory. And each one is part of a single, integrated whole.

Earth Star (Vasundharā) Chakra: Located below the feet, the Earth Star Chakra anchors us to the planet itself — to its living memory, its ancient energies, and its wisdom. It holds our connection to ancestral lineage, to the Earth as a conscious, living being, and to all of the other beings embodied on this planet. Before we can rise or ascend, we must find our rooting in the field of potential that is the Earth.

Root (Mūlādhāra) Chakra: At the base of the spine, the Root Chakra governs our most fundamental experience of safety and belonging. It holds our relationship to survival, to the body, and to the ground beneath our feet. When it flows freely, we feel secure in our existence — present, stable, and at home in the physical world.

Sacral (Svādhiṣṭhāna) Chakra: Just below the navel, the Sacral Chakra is the seat of creativity, emotion, and pleasure. It governs how we feel, how we flow, and how we connect to others emotionally. It is where desire lives — the life force that moves us toward what we love, and toward who we are becoming.

Solar Plexus (Maṇipūra) Chakra: Centred above the navel, the Solar Plexus Chakra is our personal power centre. It holds our sense of self, our will, and our capacity to act in the world. When it flows, we move through life as ourselves — making choices, setting direction, and meeting what comes with intention and confidence.

Heart (Anāhata) Chakra: At the centre of the chest — and at the centre of the chakra system — the Heart Chakra is the bridge between the physical and spiritual dimensions of our experience, and between ourselves and everything we are connecting to. It governs love, compassion, connection and gratitude: with ourselves, with others, and with life itself. It regulates how we send and receive the forms of energy that are expressions of who we are as embodied beings. It regulates the energies that flow between our system and the energy systems of embodied beings.

Throat (Viśuddha) Chakra: The Throat Chakra governs the expression of our truth. It is where what we know and experience as truth becomes what we express — where inner experience finds outward form. When it flows freely, we speak with authenticity. It is the chakra of our unique voice in the world.

Third Eye (Ājñā) Chakra: Between the brows, the Third Eye Chakra is the seat of perception, intuition and inner vision. It governs our capacity to perceive, and also to perceive beyond the surface of things — to sense patterns, access insight, to listen with genuine presence, and to trust what we know without always knowing how we know it. It is where our inner and outer senses converge.

Crown (Sahasrāra) Chakra: The Crown Chakra, at the top of the head, is not about becoming anything other than human — it is about what becomes possible when we are fully, consciously human. It is the portal where individual and universal meet: where our personal awareness opens into the awareness that holds all things. When it flows, we do not transcend ourselves — we discover that what we are runs deeper than we knew. We experience ourselves as divinely human and humanly divine.

Soul Star (Vyāpinī) Chakra: Above the crown, the Soul Star Chakra connects us to our soul's deepest purpose and to the Akashic field — the living record of all experience. It is the seat of our cosmic identity, the part of us that exists beyond this single lifetime. Working with the Soul Star invites us into conversation with who we have always been and who we are here to become.

These nine centres do not operate in isolation. They are in constant conversation and flow with one another — a living system, always seeking balance, always moving toward wholeness and coherence. When one centre is blocked, others compensate. When one opens, the whole system breathes a little more freely. Working with the chakras is not a process of fixing what is broken; it is the practice of coming into ever-deeping relationship with the intelligence already at work within us.

Our understanding of how life force energy, chakras and the metaphysics of how we move through the universe is knowledge we are coming back to. As we become more self-aware, more of the universe reveals itself to us - as we expand, what we perceive expands as well.
